What is The Backrooms?
The Backrooms is a fictional location that first appeared in a 2019 4chan thread. It has since become one of the most well-known examples of the liminal space aesthetic. Typically, the Backrooms are depicted as an endless, disorienting expanse of monotonous, yellow-tinted rooms, accessed by "no-clipping" out of reality—essentially glitching through the fabric of the world into a disturbing, otherworldly dimension.
Online communities have greatly expanded the Backrooms mythos, adding new layers such as different "levels" and the presence of strange, often malevolent entities lurking within. In early 2022, YouTuber Kane Parsons launched a series of Backrooms short films that went viral, reigniting widespread interest in the concept. Parsons' work is credited with bringing the Backrooms into mainstream consciousness, and he is now rumoured to be directing a film adaptation of his series.
